What the annual rankings update means
ICC team rankings are based on results accumulated over a multi-year period rather than on a single series or tournament. The annual update adjusts the weighting of older results so that more recent performances have a greater influence on a team's rating.
For the May 2026 update, matches played from May 2025 onward were weighted at 100 percent, while results from the preceding two years were weighted at 50 percent.
Team rankings can change after the annual update
The figures above refer specifically to the official ICC annual update published on 11 May 2026. ODI team ratings can change as further international matches are played, so later live rankings may show different rating points or positions.
This date-specific approach is important when comparing rankings because the ICC table is designed to move with international results throughout the season.
How ICC player rankings work
ICC player rankings for batting, bowling and all-round performance use a points-based rating system. They are not determined only by a player's most recent match. Career performances are taken into account, with greater emphasis placed on more recent performances.
Men's player rankings are normally updated weekly, so individual positions can change as players produce new performances in international cricket.
Why India's No.1 position matters
India's position at the top of the May 2026 annual ODI rankings reflected results accumulated across the ranking period. The margin over New Zealand was five rating points at the time of the update.
Future bilateral series and ICC events can continue to affect the table, which means the rankings should always be read together with the date on which they were published.
