Matthews and Grimmond create a 128-run opening stand
After West Indies chose to bat, Matthews and Realeanna Grimmond laid a commanding platform with a 128-run opening partnership. Grimmond contributed 53 from 70 balls, striking seven fours and one six.
Matthews controlled the innings from the other end, combining secure defence with powerful scoring through the off side. The opening stand allowed West Indies to build patiently before accelerating during the second half of the innings.
Hayley Matthews reaches a record-breaking 182
Matthews completed her century from 108 deliveries and increased the tempo sharply thereafter. She added useful partnerships with Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry and Jannillea Glasgow as West Indies closed in on 300.
She was finally bowled in the 50th over for 182 from 156 balls. Her innings contained 26 fours and two sixes and surpassed the previous highest individual ODI score by a West Indies woman.
A rare achievement in women's ODI cricket
The 182 was the sixth-highest individual score in women's ODI history. It also made Matthews the first woman to register two scores of 150 or more in ODI cricket during the same calendar year.
The milestone underlined her importance as both captain and opening batter, while providing West Indies with the total needed to control the opening match of the series.
Mupachikwa leads Zimbabwe's resistance
Zimbabwe's chase was anchored by opener Modester Mupachikwa, who compiled 86 from 106 balls with seven fours and a six. The hosts reached 100 for two in the 22nd over and remained competitive through the first half of the chase.
However, regular wickets at the other end prevented Zimbabwe from building a decisive partnership. The required rate continued to rise even as Mupachikwa held the innings together.
Alleyne completes a 99-run victory
Aaliyah Alleyne led West Indies' bowling effort with 3/44. Ashmini Munisar took 2/27, Jannillea Glasgow returned 2/37 and Afy Fletcher also claimed two wickets.
Alleyne bowled Mupachikwa for the final wicket in the 44th over, dismissing Zimbabwe for 200 and completing a 99-run victory. Matthews was named Player of the Match for her historic innings.
West Indies take a 1-0 series lead
The comprehensive win gave West Indies an ideal start to the three-match ODI series. Matthews' record provided the headline, while the opening partnership and balanced bowling performance demonstrated the visitors' control across both innings.
